The Chapel at St Leonards-Mayfield School

The Chapel at St Leonards-Mayfield School

St Leonards-Mayfield School was founded on the site of the Old Palace of Mayfield, which served as a residence for the Archbishop of Canterbury during the 14th & 15th centuries.

Following the Reformation, the Palace was occupied as a private residence, until the mid 18th century when it was abandoned and fell into ruins with the decline of the Sussex iron industry.

In 1863 the Palace was purchased by the Duchess of Leeds and presented to the Society of the Holy Child Jesus as a place to educate orphans.

The chapel was created from the ruins of the 14th century Great Hall and was one of the first buildings to be restored. It has been in continuous use since 1865 and forms a central part of life at St Leonards-Mayfield School.
